Day 10: Lane Cove National Park to Greenwich
Lane Cove National Park to Greenwich - 17 km 5 hours
Started out today from the Lane Cove National Park entrance after a short walk from Chatswood Metro via the Rail to River walk.
Been a while since I explored the eastern side of the Lane Cove River and, despite a small section of closed track, enjoyed every aspect of the walk .
There is a track head off Fullers Rd which follows the river below Chatswood Golf Course. It leads on through Mowbray Park bushland which has a plethora of laughing kookaburras.
Crossed under the Epping Road Bridge and then took the Yangoora bushland track. Unfortunately a small section around Stringybark Creek remains closed so I diverted via the road for 15 mins to rejoin the track above Ventemans Reach.
A pleasant track from there to Carisbrook House before some road walking around Linley Point and under Burns Bay Bridge to rejoin a track around Burns Bay. Riverview College is also closed during term time so I'll have to return in school holidays to explore their magnificent little peninsula.
Tambourine Bay was next followed by a little more street walking. This time to admire the gorgeous houses of Longueville and Northwood as well as their pretty, if tiny, pockets of bushland and waterside reserves. Then it was the Gore Creek track and the Greenwich Point Track to end the day at Greenwich Point Wharf.
All of these tracks are well signposted once you are on them, but I think it is high time we linked them all with some through walk signage. Walking the 200 miles/300 km of Sydney Harbour is just so doable - I'm surprised that our many tourist orgs have not already lobbied for it. Guess I have to start writing a few letters!
One of the great pleasures of walking the whole of Sydney Harbour has been how 'action-packed' each day is. So many changes of mood and view and such a variety of landscapes. Plenty of bushland, so many special water views, wonderfully quiet suburban streets and tons of wildlife.
I love living in this special city with its spectacular bonus of having so many options to escape into nature for a few hours - beaches, headlands, harbour, rivers and bush... what more could one ask for?
