Minnamurra to Gerringong

Day 54 | Minnamurra to Gerringong - Kiama Coastal Walk

Smell the sea and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly. Van Morrison

A perfect day full of green, green grass, blue, blue sky, magnificent beaches and lava headlands.

Started at Minnamurra and followed the deservedly well-known Kiama Coastal Walk, past Jones Beach and Cathedral Rocks to magnificent Bombo Headland (well worth the 2km detour from the main track). The Boneyard was looking perfect this morning under a cloudless sky - crystal water just begging me for the first swim of the day.

Then it was along Bombo Beach and around Pheasant (Plucker) Point to Kiama and the Blowhole (just a 'hole' with minimal 'blow' today).

Great to catch up with some old Brunei friends at the great cafe on the Blowhole headland. Always delight in some 'back in the day' Brunei reminiscences.

South of Kiama ('kiarama' = place where the sea booms) it was a well-made path around Storm Bay, Kiama and Kendalls Beaches and then out to Kaleula Head.

Next, the Little Blowhole (a more reliable 'blow' than the big one) and Marsden Head, before lovely Easts Beach and a stop for another swim.

After Easts Beach the track is essentially open grassy fields winding around the dramatic, layered latite and sandstone headlands and the matching eroded inlets. Loves Bay is a great little 'secret' beach and Bare Bluff provided some of the most dramatic views along the way.

Minimal shade, so not a walk for the sun shy at this time of year - my recommendation would be to do it on a calm winter's day with the whales offshore - it would then be total and absolute perfection.

Campbell Hole, a km or so around the rockshelf from Werri Beach was looking blissful today from above, and is a mighty fine place to while away a few hours either side of low tide.

Once at Werri Beach I thought I was done, but the train station is a further 2 km 'up hill and down dale' hike from the southern end of the beach. No worries. Stopped in at the 'Mick Cronin' pub along the way for a cool down schooner of Old to celebrate the conclusion to Stage 10.

And finally the quirky little 2 carriage diesel train back from Gerringong. A short but beautiful ride between there and Kiama - the train hugs the coast and skirts parts of the walk - very nice - change at Kiama for Minnamurra or Sydney.

So, that's a wrap for this stage. Commencing the next stage from Gerringong to Ulladulla in a few weeks time. Some unfamiliar and intriguing bits of the coast in the next stretch - excited already!

BTW, if you're interested, my articles on each stage of this coastal camino are published in the free, and excellent, online magazine, Bushwalk. Stage 5 in the February edition and prior stages in earlier issues - with upcoming ones in each new edition.

Thanks all for following along   . Hope you find a place to let your soul and spirit fly!
